The Role of the Mainstream Teacher

1. Accept that everyone learns differently and recognize each student’s learning difference.
2. Talk honestly with the student and the parent(s). Explain to the student with dyslexia that she or he is not stupid.
3. Foster student positive self-esteem. Give genuine praise whenever possible; promote activities that yield success.
4. Educate yourself about learning differences and dyslexia.
5. Support the home and family and keep parents involved.
6. Be aware of different learning styles and be flexible in your teaching style
7. Differentiate in the classroom by modifying class work and homework, materials, texts and tests.
8. Learn more about the structure of language.
9. Encourage and support a whole-school policy on learning differences and early screening, identification and intervention.
